Born during the 1400's in Renaissance Italy, Damon Salvatore had everything you could want. His father, Giuseppe Salvatore, was one of the leading men in Florence and Damon was born wealthy and privileged. Being the first child, Damon developed a close relationship with his mother, however, a few years after his birth, Damon's mother became pregnant again and Stefan, his younger brother was born. But - due to pregnancy complications, the mother fell ill and died shortly afterwards.During his lifetime, Damon made sure he was always one step ahead of his younger brother. This seems, in part, due to the effect his mother's death had on Damon. Their mother died when Stefan and Damon were very young and since then Damon has been resentful of Stefan.Stefan himself believes that Damon blames him for his mother's death. His mother's death also seemed to cause a rift between him and his father that continued into adulthood. Damon seems to have rebelled against what his family expected of him and also, as was normal at the time at University, instead of defending the family's honor, he indulged in his own selfish pleasures - hunting, selling falconry and womanizing.After a while, he decided he had had enough of the University and its restrictions and returned to the Salvatore estate, where they had a visitor - Katherine von Swartzschild, who was visiting Italy after an illness and with whom Stefan fell in love.Damon was intoxicated by Katherine's beauty and selfishly wanted to claim her as his own, but then again, the opportunity to upset his father and Stefan was too good to pass up.

Katherine was also in love with Damon, but still deeply in love with Stefan and couldn't choose between them. She told them both her secret – that she was a vampire – and shared her gift with them.Damon was furious that she didn't just choose him over his brother and demanded (with Stefan) that Katherine choose one of them.When she didn't make up her mind, the brothers left in a rage, and the next day they found Katherine's ashes in the garden. The two brothers were upset and blamed the other. Stefan attacked Damon and they fought each other with swords, and eventually Damon's sword slipped under Stefan's guard and pierced his heart.When Damon stepped over Stefan, presuming to see if his brother was dead, Stefan with what was left of his strength to stab the crow.The brothers woke up in their tomb a few days later, having been turned into vampires by Katherine's blood. Damon ran off into the night, abandoning Stefan and ignoring Stefan's screams.From what Stefan told Elena, Damon became the leader of a group of 'free mercenaries' and enjoyed the power he gained by killing innocent people. As the years passed, Damon became more powerful and frequently threatened Stefan's life.Later, Damon appears in Fell's Church (or Mystic Falls) with Stefan, having been lured there by Katherine and the fight for Elena ensues between the brothers.

Unlike Stefan, Damon is seen as extremely selfish when it comes to Elena, willing to put Elena's life before anyone else's, including loved ones.Although Elena cares deeply for Damon and has feelings for him, she still loves Stefan and has repeatedly chosen him over Damon.KATHERINE: He fell madly in love with Katherine when she came to Florence.He and Stefan were fighting over who would win over Katherine and she decided to bite the two brothers so that the three of them could be together.The two brothers objected to this, which hurt Katherine, causing her to fake her death.Damon initially acts flippant towards her, but she seduces him before saying she never loved him.Damon's feelings for Katherine have waned while Katherine still tries to seduce him from time to time. It is later revealed that Katherine did indeed love him and his brother, but would eventually choose her own safety over them.ALARA: He met her by chance when she was fleeing through the forest of a sanatorium while he had just eaten and was reflecting on his immortality and his brother.He welcomed Alara at first but felt that she wasn't human, even if he couldn't identify what species she was.The woman's smell as well as everything about her attracted him instantly but after spending some time together, Alara left him claiming that she needed to get out of there.A while later they meet again and Alara makes appearances in Mystic Falls while Damon harbors desires and feelings for her (even though both are monsters to each other).
